Economics and Business
A good economist will often be better at understanding the big picture and how it relates to the firm. The economist is focused on helping people make the best decisions, in the face of uncertainty.
On the other hand, the business person will understand how to manage the people and direct marketing strategies. The business person will understand more of the day to day operations of how to make the business operate.
For a job, it is better to have a background in business. In the first place, most business owners don't want you making decisions for them. Instead, they want someone to handle the day to day tasks of running the business. Most firms strongly prefer an accounting major to a business major. The reason is that accounting is really the language of business. The soft skills, like people skills, can be improved upon, but not really taught very easily.
